| .:Episode 1:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
First Move
|
| The start, also referring to the very first move made.
|
| Generic Ship Categories |
| Anatoure Battleship |
| Anatoure's chief battleship (we're not sure why they say 'chief' battleship in Japanese even when they make no mention of other battleships aside from battleship class distinctions). They were designed to fight in groups by forming a battleline as per Guild Regulations. They were built with Guild technology and rely on Claudia Units. |
| Deusis Battleship |
| Like Anatoure battleships, they were built with Guild technology. Until now, their capabilities were more or less equal to Anatoure's battleships, but... |
| Guild Battleship |
| Decorated with geometric patterns, their offensive capacity is such that one ship could deal with an entire Anatoure/Deusis fleet. |
| Vanships |
| A generic term for small-scale airships. Vanships were originally used for postal service and communication purposes. However, while inter-battleship warfare was mainstream, Vanships also began to be used for combat purposes. While the majority of airship engines are under the Guild's control, Vanship engines are not. Thus, Vanships also came to symbolize freedom. |
| Geography |
| Anatoure and Deusis |
| Anatoure [Greek: Anatoraps/Anatouraps]
Deusis [Greek: Disite/Disiti]
Anatoure and Deusis are Prestaeir's two large empires. Separated by the Grand Stream, they had little contact. However, the situation changes dramatically when Deusis develops a shield to breach the Grand Stream and begins to invade Anatoure. Initially, both nations observed Guild Regulations, but those Regulations were suddenly breached by Deusis. Moreover, the Guild did not intervene, which resulted in instantly putting Anatoure at a severe disadvantage. |
| Guild |
| An aerial city/civilization that exists in the Grand Stream. While possessing highly advanced technology and providing it to both Anatoure and Deusis, it maintains neutrality and does not ally with either nation. |
| Prestaeir |
| The world in which the series takes place. |
| Machinery |
| Acceleration Booster |
| A system that uses fluid chemical reactions to achieve short-term yet explosive propulsion instead of using Claudia units. Most boosters are for one-time use only, but the more expensive models can be used several times. |
| Engine |
| To emphasize that Vanship units are not under Guild control, they are generally called "engines" instead of "units". |
| Starter |
| Since Claus' Vanship has had numerous weight-decreasing modifications for racing purposes, it lacks a Claudia unit starter. It therefore requires external electricity and "air" to jumpstart the unit. |
| Unit (Claudia Unit) |
| An all-encompassing term for aerial propulsion systems using Claudia. Aside from those used in vanships, all units are under the Guild's control and are maintained by specialists who are sent from the Guild. If a ship accumulates a certain degree of damage during battle, the unit will dissociate and return to the Guild (you see this happening in Ep 01 for a damaged Deusis ship). AKA Claudia Units. |
| Verify Check |
| The minimal pre-flight system check that is necessary. Claus' Vanship is maintained well, so as long as the verify check is complete, the ship is air-worthy for basic tasks. |
| Military |
| Armor Piercing Shell (AP Shell) |
| A type of cannon shot intended to pierce armored opponents. The two other main types are incendiary scatter shots and aerial torpedos. Though similar, the former is packed with smaller shells that will scatter and the latter has shrapnel placed within the torpedo itself to achieve the same effect.
|
| Guild Regulations |
| In this world, various restrictions have been placed on war by the Guild to limit the loss of ships. First, riflemen must exchange shots. When the number of casualties exceeds a certain percentage, a cease-fire offer is made. Normally, the Guild will then mediate, and all efforts are made to prevent warfare from proceeding to an exchange of intra-ship artillery fire. |
| Immelman Turn |
| An aerial combat maneuver created by Max Immelman, a WWI ace pilot who has been called one of the gods of aerial combat. The original version, the version used by the Vanships, and the version used by modern jet engine planes all differ slightly. |
| Riflemen |
| Troops that fire at one another before intra-ship artillery fire begins. Since they must face the enemy and fire at near point-blank range, the position requires incredible courage. However, their lives are treated lightly by the commanders.
|
| Ships |
| Answeller |
| One of the front line ships of the Madosein battle fleet. A Claimh Solais Class 4 ship. It is the named after the sword of Lugh, the God of Light in Celtic Mythology. |
| Armada |
| One of the front line ships of the Madosein battle fleet. It was originally stationed in Minagis. |
| Claihm Solais |
| [It is apparently the name of a particular ship as well as that of a ship category]
Madosein's Flagship. A standard Anatoure battleship, it is not capable of very high speeds, but it is heavily armored and contains many riflemen and artillery. It is named after the sword of Nuada, the God of War in Celtic Methology.
|
| Silvanna |
| Commanded by Alex Rou, the ship excels in aeronautical guerilla combat and has won innumerable victories. However, since it is not under the command of the Anatoure Military but rather Alex Rou himself, this invincible ship is viewed as a nuisance within the military.
Conceptualized in a totally different manner from the other battleships, it is capable of greater speeds and has greater firepower. Containing an internal Vanship dock, the ship is home to a few Vanships. Its battle record is flawless; the ship is feared as being the "Invincible Battleship" by its enemies and allies alike.
|
| Tellemea |
| One of the front line ships of the Madosein battle fleet. Like the Armada, it was mobilized from the forces stationed at Minagis. |
| Signals |
| Black-Yellow-Black |
| A signal volley that allows the two parties to begin fighting under Guild surveillance. It is a combination of colors that urge caution and warning. |
| World |
| Commission Tube |
| A tube used for Vanship letter delivery that indicates the mission's danger rating by a number of stars. To deliver these tubes no matter what constitutes the pride and honor of Vanship pilots. So, if a Vanship takes on the mission of another Vanship for whatever reason, the original pilots' pride and honor are thought to be transferred to them along with the mission. |
| Communication Tube |
| The container into which a commision tube are put by the Vanship Consortium to be handed over to the various Vanships. (They are the cylinders on a ring that are passed out to the Vanships at the beginning of the episode) |
| Third Minagis Battle |
| The largest battle since the Deusis invasion, the outskirts of Minagis had been successfully defended by Anatoure during the previous two engagements. |
| .:Episode 2:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Luft Vanship
|
| Luft means 'Sky' in German. In Chess, it means to advance a pawn in
order to provide the King with a means of escaping. In the context of this episode's title, "Luft" therefore has the dual meaning: using the Vanship as a decoy as well as a Vanship in the sky.
Note: As many kind users have been pointing out, "luft" does not actually mean "sky" in German, it means "air". However, since the official site says in Japanese that it means "sky", we have kept the erroneous translation in order to reflect the creator's original intentions in choosing "luft". |
| Military |
| Survivor Medals |
| A medal given in the Anatoure military to indicate that you have participated in a battle. When 20 medals are acquired, the right to make a freelance contract is granted, and it is possible for soldiers to apply for different positions within the fleet. |
| Ships |
| Barthalon |
| One of the front-line ships of the Madosein battle fleet. A Formor Class 2 ship.
|
| Connort |
| A ship in Madosein's battle fleet. An Alustar Class 3 Ship. |
| Goliath |
| The ship commanded by Viscount (Equivalent to a Colonel) Nouriz. Nouriz' portrait is painted on the ship's bow. |
| Mise |
| One of the front-line ships of the Madosein battle fleet. An Alustar Class 5 ship. |
| Signals |
| Signal DX |
| A signal that means, "Our ship is sinking!" Normally, D and X flags are both raised, but there can also be a "DX" flag in Prestaeir's battleships. |
| .:Episode 3:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Transpose
|
| In chess, it means to switch maneuvers midway through another. In the episode, it alludes to the fact that Claus shifts from racing to carrying out a job as well as the fact that Aru is transfered from Ralph to Claus. |
| Geography |
| Bottleneck |
| A portion of the underground waterworks system in Norkia that is extremely confined and deep. Used as part of the race course, navigating through the Bottleneck requires technical skill. |
| Corkscrew |
| A spiral corner in a ravine on the outskirts of Norkia. In addition to being very narrow, the slope is also quite steep. It is said to be one of the tough spots in the race. |
| Death's Corridor |
| The passageway that snakes through a temple ruin inside the aforementioned ravine. It is extremely narrow and therefore dangerous. *note: as far as we could tell/hear, this location was not mentioned in episode 3 itself, hmm o.o* |
| Military |
| Barrel Roll |
| An aerial combat maneuver, it involves a flight pattern that appears as if the pilot is following circles engraved along the insides of a barrel. Claus uses this technique to exit the Corkscrew. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Fat Chicken |
| A porcine pilot in the Norkia Race, he has a effeminate way of speaking and is claustrophobic.
Note1: In the preview for ep 3, we translated "buta tori" as "Pig Catcher" instead of "Pig Bird" since tori can be translated as being either. We basically lacked context to choose one over the other ^^ - since we now know that it refers to Fat Chicken, it'll be translated as "Pig Bird."
Note2: We previously explained why we called this pilot a 'she' in ep 3 (it was because they said "Buta Tori no oba(a)san kawaisou" in the preview for ep 4, which was interpreted to mean "the poor Pig-Bird lady" [translated as "poor lady"]). However, in ep 4 we find out that the phrase actually meant "the poor Pig-Bird's granny" (both translations were equally possible), so our reason for calling this Fat Chicken a "she" has been negated x.x. Hope this demonstrates how much translation depends on context ^^; |
| Hurricane Hawk |
| A multiple winner of the Norkia Race, he boasts 2 years of non-stop victories.
|
| Laundry Man |
| A laid-back guy who puts out his laundry to dry on the race course itself. In the rough version of this episode's script, it is noted that he is single, is 28 years old, and wears a wifebeater and striped boxers. Lucky Condor and Old Boy retired after plunging into his laundry. |
| Nose-Hair Guy |
| The nickname Ravey gave to Sunny Boy. |
| Ralph Wednesday |
| A pilot who appears in episode 03. His skills were top-notch, but he was killed while being pursued by the Guild. |
| Ships |
| Claus and Ravey |
| This term is not listed in official site. We are just trying to explain something ^^
In episode 3, the scoreboard lists the name of Vanships that participated in the Norkia Cup Race. "Claus and Ravey" was listed among them, so we concluded that this phrase refers to a singular entity (their Vanship), at least in episode 3, and conjugated verbs accordingly. ^_^ Just trying to avoid confusion!
|
| World |
| 7 Stars |
| Designating an ultra-important (engrishy >.<; sorry people) mission, it is rarely seen for normal Vanship courier missions. In Norkia, even 3 stars designate a relatively difficult mission (ex: delivering a missive to a war zone); the highest difficulty rating is normally 5 stars. |
| Figurehead |
| A decoration that every Vanship has that also servs as a personal signature of sorts. Claus uses the figurehead that he inherited from his father. |
| .:Episode 4:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Zugzwang
|
| In German, it refers to a critical, dire situation. In chess, this term refers to being forced to make a move by one's opponent. (No reference on the official site as to how this term relates to the events in ep 4, although it's pretty obvious ^^) |
| Geography |
| Forest of Nebura |
| A forest covering the foot of the mountainous range that lies north of Norkia. |
| Mayasa Village |
| A small village that lies on the periphery of Norkia. The birthplace of Fat Chicken's grandmother. |
| Temple Ruins |
| An abandoned ruin that lies in the northern mountainous area of Norkia.
|
| Machinery |
| Hook |
| An anchor that is attached to an ejectable wire. It is used for securing the Vanship and for communication purposes. |
| Military |
| Sound Pattern |
| Whether for a large-scale ship or a Vanship, each Claudia unit (called "engines" for Vanships) has a specific sound pattern. The star-shaped vessel that is pursuing Aru presumably sampled all the sound patterns of the Vanships that were near Ralph's.
|
| World |
| Consortium Headquarters |
| The headquarters of the Norkian Vanship Consortium that Claus and Ravey are affiliated with. The Consortium itself exists in many regions, but headquarters distribute jobs and take care of hurt and retired pilots, etc. |
| .:Episode 5:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Positional Play
|
| In chess, it refers to assessing the situation from the overall picture and to accordingly create a strategic formation that will gradually corner the opponent. (Again, there was no reference - maybe the production team is getting a little pressed for time ^^; ) |
| Machinery |
| Air Brake |
| Equipment that allows for rapid deceleration and decent by opening small "wings"/flaps to increase air resistance. Side note: the equipment that is activated in the front section of Claus' Vanship in episode 1 is the aileron. |
| Caulking Agent |
| A filler used to fix small-scale damage and holes. It is commonly stocked on Vanships by pilots since their jobs as carriers means that there is potential for various happenings. |
| Checklist |
| A collective referenceto the various checks that Alistia made prior to the Vanship's launch, including the confirmation of control systems, instrument panel components, switch between fuel tanks and the fuel density - all are minimal requirements for flight. Compared to the checks for Claus' Vanship in episode 1, it is clear that Tatiana's Vanship is more advanced. |
| Military |
| Lift |
| Machinery located on the Silvanna's back deck to lower and raise Vanships. It has a bilayer structure such that Vanships can be transported to both upper and lower launch decks. |
| World |
| Half Payment |
| There are two ways for Vanship carriers to secure monetary recompense. One way is to obtain half of the payment in advance along with the communications tube and to receive the rest upon delivery. The other way is to obtain this "Half-Money" upon delivery and then receive the rest from the person who requested the delivery by showing this "Half-Money" as delivery confirmation to him/her. The latter method explains why Ravey was so concerned about obtaining half of the payment in episode 2.
|
| .:Episode 6:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Arbiter Attack
|
| Although the term "arbiter" means "arbitrator," in chess it refers to the judge. The title therefore refers to the fact that those who were originally supposed to be bystanders and judges are now attacking. |
| Military |
| Cartridge |
| Clips used in steam-driven Vanship machine guns. Steam required to propel the bullets is diverted from the engine. Containing 100 shots per cartridge (200 shots total if you count the machine guns on the left and right), the shots are spherical like the ones used by the riflemen in episode 1 and lack effectiveness and reach. |
| Claudia's Magnetic Field |
| Claudia units direct a downwards force in order to effect a buoyant force on the ship, but since Costavi does not exactly understand the theory, he uses the term "magnetic field." Since the force in question follows the Claudia unit's shape and is manifested in the shape of a "donut," the areas directly beneath the unit - the area beneath the lower-level launching deck and the lift - are safe. |
| Deck [this is just a phonetic memo] |
| While this term is generally pronounced "kanpan," those who are involved in the shipping industry pronounce it as "kouhan." |
| Distance: 25000 |
| The unit is in feet. On the Silvanna, nautical miles are used when only a rough estimate is needed (ex: relatively short-range direct anti-ship fire, distances on maps, etc.) while feet are used when more precise measurements are required (ex: inter-Vanship fire). Although yards are used as an indicator of medium distance, the unit is rarely used. |
| Full-Speed Attack Time Limit |
| Star-shaped attack units are able to sustain flight for long distances during scouting and transit, but when they have to engage in battle with engines at full throttle, they can only fly for 20 minutes. Alex knew this from personal experience. |
| Inertia |
| This term refers to the crank used to start up the Vanship's engine. Since Claus' Vanship does not have a cell-motor (aka starter in non-Engrish terms), it is necessary to start the engine externally. |
| Near Inaudible Flight |
| While each unit has its own specific sound pattern, it can be dampened to the point where it cannot be identified by minimizing unit output and speed. This state is difficult to achieve in the units of normal ships since they are under Guild control and Guild technicians control unit output. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Wina |
| The chief "listener" (presumably, she listens for the distinct sound patterns made by different engines) on the Silvanna. She holds the rank of Second Lieutenant. |
| .:Episode 7:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Interesting Claus
|
| In chess, it refers to the moves that are interesting. As might be implied by the title's words, the series focused on Claus in this episode. |
| Machinery |
| Supplementary Engine |
| Vanships for military use may have a miniature lightweight engine that is different from the main engine. It is used for improving overall engine output and for powering the machine guns. |
| Military |
| Aft Residential Zone |
| In the aft portion of the Silvanna's central deck, there are waiting rooms for pilots as well as staff rooms for mechanics. These rooms are collectively called the "aft residential zone." |
| External Fuel Tank |
| An additional fuel tank that is located outside of the Vanship. It can also be detached and dropped from the Vanship. |
| Generator Room |
| On the Silvanna, there are two Generator Rooms - one left and one right on the aft section of the lower deck. |
| Redout |
| Refers to symptoms that arise when blood rushes towards the head upon the individuals' prolonged exposure to a strong G force. Blood pools in the head in excess amounts, resulting in bloodshot eyes and a reddened field of vision. If the situation worsens, one may faint or even die in some cases. |
| Special Rations |
| Refers to food and drink that are not usually served. |
| Staff Room |
| On the Silvanna, there are numerous staff rooms. Since only a minimal number of staff is maintained onboard, it is quite often that these rooms are used for storage instead.
|
| .:Episode 8:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Takeback
|
| This term means "to invalidate" or "to countermand". In chess, it refers to when a player demands a halt, but such an action is considered an egregious violation of good taste that will lower the player's reputation. Sometimes, the player may even be disqualified if the action is interpreted as being a violation of the rules.
|
| Military |
| "Silvanna of the Genocide" |
| One of the Silvanna's nicknames. Rumor has it that neither its enemies nor its allies are left standing in its wake.
|
| Multiple-launch, armor-piercing, dispersal cannon |
| Refers to a weapons array inset in Silvanna’s stern that consists of several multiple-launch cannon. The cannon use a Vanship booster that has been adapted to launch large-scale warheads at an extremely high initial velocity. As such, its penetration power is sufficient to destroy a large battleship in one strike. However, it can only strike enemies that are directly to the ship's rear, making it a difficult weapon to use. As a side note, Anatoure relies on shots which destructive power is dependent on kinetic energy since Anatoure is unaware of the Munroe Effect*. *Note: The Munroe Effect, AKA the Neumann Effect. Basically, this effect explains how heat/chemical energy generated by shots (if they are equipped with an explosive charge, which they are not in the world of Last Exile) can pierce armor plating upon impact. Prior to this effect's discovery, whether shots could successfully pierce armor was entirely dependent upon shot velocity (i.e. kinetic energy as opposed to chemical energy). This effect was used to conceptualize HEAT (High-Explosive Antitank) shot types in WW2. Ref: http://www3.ic-net.or.jp/~gangho/netuenerugi.htm.
|
| The "Invincible Battleship" |
| One of the Silvanna’s nicknames. It earned this nickname due to its flawless combat record.
|
| The "Unharmed Emperor" |
| The nickname of Viscount Knowles' battleship (Viscount appears to have been Captain Knowles' other title). Another nickname is the "Fleeing Goliath". This nickname stuck because the Goliath is always the first to flee the battlefield. In episode 2, it could be seen fleeing the battlefield while other ships were sinking.
|
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Goliath's Second-in-Command |
| Subordinate officer of Marquis Knowles’ son and a bona fide military officer. While he has some merit, due to the incompetence of his superior and lack of personal integrity, he sets foot on the wrong path.
|
| World |
| 80 claudia |
| The standard unit of currency in this world is the "claudia". The term originates from the fact that 1 ounce of Claudia ore was priced at 1 claudia in the past. 80 claudia is about a week's worth of food expenses.
|
| Chrysalis Emperor |
| A bird entered in the race at Walker's Casino.
|
| Duel |
| Duels happen on a regular basis between individuals who valorize honor. While duels may occur between individuals, it is not too rare to have duels occur between ships as well since nobility possess their own battleships. In such cases, it is normative to have a witness decide the outcome before a critical hit is struck.
|
| Gold Spark |
| A bird entered in the race at Walker's Casino. While its color scheme is rather glitzy, it is a favorite in the race.
|
| Green Typhoon |
| A bird that was entered in the race at Walker's Casino.
|
| Marquis |
| As lords of important areas who are also charged with the region's defense, they automatically attain a rank of vice-admiral in the military. Madosein and Knowles fall under this category; they each possess their own armed force.
|
| Red Snake |
| A bird entered in the race at Walker's Casino. Its red color reminds the mechanics of Tatiana.
|
| Sleepyhead |
| A bird entered in the race at Walker's Casino. His image color is white, and he reminds Ravey of Claus.
|
| Top-Notch Water |
| A drink found on Walker's Dock. It is very high-grade water. One glass costs 80 claudia.
|
| Under the Emperor's direct supervision |
| Goliath’s Captain Knowles claims this status in episode 8. The more influential nobilities fund their own fleets, which are not included in normal military organizations. However, since each noble family obtains instructions directly from the Emperor and not through any military command center, in a sense they could said to be under the Emperor's direct supervision, but in this case it was only a bluff.
|
| Walker's Dock |
| A dock for civilians that also offers recreational facilities to skyfarers. Ships like the Silvanna, which is unable to rely upon traditional naval stations, or the Goliath, which fled the battlefield, can dock there if they pay the price.
|
| .:Episode 9:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Calculate Alex
|
| This term means "to calculate" or "to contrive". In chess, it refers to a preemptive move. In this episode, it indicates that Alex may be making many moves that constitute stepping stones towards a larger plan.
|
| Geography |
| Augran |
| A satellite city near Wiskia, which lies east of Minagis.
|
| Horizon Cave |
| An independent trading city that lies northeast of Minagis. It is located in a remote region and is privy to extraterritorial rights.
|
| Military |
| Eligible for the Draft |
| A qualification upon draft inspection. This signifies that an individual is in good health and is capable of being pressed into active duty.
|
| Heavy-Cargo |
| (While this term appeared on the website as an episode 9 term, we don't think this appears until episode 11) A large-scale Vanship that, while incapable of high speeds, is used to carry large numbers of people and a large amount of cargo.
|
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Campbell |
| Chief Navigator of the Silvanna and third in the chain of command after Alex and Sophia. His rank is Lieutenant Colonel, and he is privy to vast amounts of combat experience. When Alex and Sophia are both absent (as was the case in episode 9), he is left in command.
|
| Delphine Eraclaeir |
| Deeo's sister. She apparently likes being flattered.
|
| Eurys |
| Someone Alex is looking for. Details are unknown.
|
| World |
| 8 hour endurance race |
| Horizon Cave's famous Vanship endurance race. It is an 8 hour race in which Vanships lent by sponsors vie with each other on a course that was constructed in Horizon Cave’s hollow interior. It is an extremely rigorous race that can only be conquered if the pilots and mechanics are both skilled and have stamina. It is also a race that every Vanship racer dreams about. At the end of the 8 hours (at midnight), the team that's in the lead with the greatest number of laps around the course becomes the winner.
|
| Welcome Meeting |
| The mechanics team on the Silvanna welcomes new members with this ceremony. There is nothing special about it; they just beat the new members up.
|
| .:Episode 10:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Swindle
|
| This term means “to deceive” or “to con.” In chess, it refers to making your opponent fall for a trick move. In this episode, it refers to the fact that many characters are trying to make each other fall for trick moves. |
| Military |
| Bit |
| Small-sized light-emitting signals that Tatiana’s unit was equipped with so that they could serve as markers when Tatiana needed to withdraw from Horizon Cave. By imbedding these in the course, Tatiana’s unit was able to return to the Silvanna. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Marquis Knowles |
| An influential lord of Anatoure’s Western lands, including Minagis. He seems to be a doting parent since he attempts to entrap Alex in order to avenge his son. |
| The Hamilton House |
| Aru’s family. It is thought that Aru had been protected by Graf, the butler (his name was translated as “the Graph” in episode 8 due to lack of context… our apologies), and Geeta, the nurse (who died in episode 3). The Hamilton House was responsible for protecting Aru as well as one of the phrases constituting “Exile’s Door”. |
| World |
| 500 million claudia |
| The closing bid for Exile’s Door. However, the amount is sufficient to create a mobile force with crew members, and is certainly not an amount Alex would have at his disposal. Also, considering that Delphine paid that amount with a mere ring, we can presume that the auction was only a farce. |
| Calling |
| Aru has apparently inherited a calling that is related to the Exile. |
| Reward |
| The ring Delphine gave to the proprietor of Horizon Cave, Juan Carlos, to “pay” for 500 million claudia. In reality, it was an assassination tool. |
| What lies beyond the furthest reaches of memory? |
| One of the phrases that are said to constitute Door to Exile.** In total, it is thought that there are four questions and their complementary answers.
**The official site has put down both “Door to Exile” and “Exile’s Door” (see the entry for “500 million claudia” (episode 10), “House Hamilton” (episode 10), and “What lies beyond the furthes reaches of the sky?” (episode 11) to see the latter). In the episodes themselves, however, we hear “eguzairu no tobira” = “Exile’s Door” instead of “eguzairu e no tobira” = “Door to Exile,” so we believe that this “Door to Exile” entry is an error.
|
| .:Episode 11:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Develop
|
| This term means "to develop" or "development", but in chess, it refers to a move in which you position your pieces in an optimal layout. In episode 11, it refers to how the various characters begin to act in their own best interest after "swindling" each other in episode 10. |
| Geography |
| Northern Highlands |
| A mountainous region that spreads across northern Norkia. It is famous in Anatoure for excellent coffee beans. Vincent, who is in charge of defenses in Norkia, gets them through Madosein. |
| Machinery |
| Solder |
| An alloy of lead and tin that have been combined at a low temperature. Its stability and affinity with other metals are high, and it is often used to attach cables. It seems that this alloy was used in the most unexpected place in episode 11. |
| Military |
| Battle of Autrant |
| A past battle in which Vincent and Alex fought together against Deusis. |
| Vanship on Standby |
| Vanship pilots normally maintain a standby unit on a tripartite shift basis so that there will always be one Vanship that can embark on emergency message deliveries and such at a moment's notice. The term refers to the Vanship (and its pilot and navi) which is on standby. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Lycius |
| Chief Engineer of the Silvanna. From his conversation with Deeo, it is presumed that he is from the Guild. |
| Maestro Delphine's House |
| From the surname "Eraclaeir", Alex recognizes that Deeo is related to Delphine. This again shows that Alex is acquainted with many aspects of the Guild that aren't common knowledge. |
| The Bacianus House |
| Like the Hamilton House, one of the four great Houses of the Guild that was purged by Delphine. |
| The Dagobell House |
| Like the Hamilton House, one of the four great Houses of the Guild that was purged by Delphine. |
| Vincent Artsai |
| A Colonel in the Anatoure Military and Captain of the battleship Urbanus. Friends with Alex since times spent in Officer's School, he is in charge of defences in the Norkia region. |
| Ships |
| Urbanus |
| A high-speed warship which design completely differs from that of the Silvanna and all Deusis/Anatoure ships that have appeared to this point. Its appearance resembles that of a large-scale Vanship. |
| World |
| Battleship Coffee |
| Vincent loves coffee, and as this fact is widely known, it became a famous specialty aboard the Urbanus. |
| Exile |
| A certain "thing" that is sought after by various people, including the Anatoure Emperor. |
| Guild's Right of Entry |
| The Guild reserves the right to go onboard any ship with a Claudia Unit and perform an inspection. Should the Guild's right be denied by a ship, it is possible that the Guild will rescind the Claudia Unit, making refusal highly unlikely for any normal ship. However, that was not the case with the Silvanna. |
| Mysterion |
| A term that refers to the phrase (aka "Door to the Exile") Alex obtained in episode 10 as well as to the phrase that was spoken by Deeo in episode 11. |
| Rebels |
| Even though the Silvanna's Claudia Unit is Guild-made, it's not registered with the Guild. Luciola therefore decides that it must have been taken from the Guild by rebels. |
| Weather Regulation Unit |
| While it seems to have significance of a global import, Deeo does not appear to know anything about it. |
| What lies beyond the furthest reaches of the sky? |
| The Mysterion that has been passed down for generations in the Eraclaeir House. It is thought to complement the "Exile's Door" that Alex obtained in episode 10. |
| .:Episode 12:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Discovered Attack
|
| While the term refers to being attacked upon discovery, in chess, it means to maneuver decoy pieces in order to lure the opponent into a trap. In episode 12, it refers to the fact that Alex and Vincent are both analyzing each other's traps and are trying to take advantage of each other in order to establish an advantage in battle. |
| Generic Ship Categories |
| Urbanus-class |
| Six ships belong to this category. Of them, Units 01-05 joined the battle in episode 12. From Units 01 through 05, their names are: Urbanus, Martinus, Georgius, Sebastianus, Julianus, and Eustachius (names of Roman Emperors and Saints).
|
| Geography |
| Dragon's Fang |
| A treacherous "reef" in the skies with many rocky outcroppings protruding from the "sea" of clouds and with periodic strong vertical updrafts (aka thermals). The Silvanna uses this region often to wage battle. |
| Machinery |
| Smoke |
| Refers to an evasive maneuver that obscures the enemy's line of sight by using smoke that is generated either via a signal round or via imperfect engine combustion. Vanships are always equipped with signal rounds, and Claus is seen using blue smoke in episode 2. |
| Military |
| Three-way intersect attack |
| Refers to the following attack method that is utilized by Urbanus-class ships: the ships use the ramming device on their stern to attack the Silvanna from various directions in a time-delayed manner. Being a strategy that will cost the ships their escape route, it shows that the Urbanus-class ships are determined enough to risk friendly casualties in their rush attacks on the enemy. |
| "16-point rotation" |
| This term was translated as an 180-degree turn in episodes 11 (preview section) and 12. Since we cannot find suitable military jargon in English that was equivalent to the term (literally translated here) at this time, we opted to just put the meaning down instead of guessing the jargon itself. |
| "Near, near, near, far, bracket" |
| Refers to a situation resulting from the following shot targeting strategy. Four shots are fired with three shots landing in front of the target battleship and one landing in its rear. The landing points "brackets" the target into a fixed position. Thus, if the attacking ship then proceeds to fire at the target in earnest, there should be hits. |
| Advance at full speed |
| The speed in question exceeds the normal speed used while cruising the skies. It is used in situations that do not require combat speeds but do require more than cruising speeds. |
| Dispersal Cannon in scatter mode |
| Refers to a firing method for the multi-fire, armor-piercing dispersal cannon. While this type of cannon can only fire to the Silvanna's rear, it is possible to affect the shot trajectory such that the cannon can cover a wider range by adjusting the rotation of the cannon shots. |
| Inaudible Flight |
| Ships under Guild regulation are unable to engage in Inaudible Flight in principle since their Claudia Unit output is regulated by the Guild. The fact that the Urbanus-class ships are able to engage in Inaudible Flight indicates that they are equipped with specialized Claudia Units. |
| Shot Type: incendiary scatter shot |
| This type of shot is crammed with numerous chemical incendiary charges that are ignited by a time-delayed fuse after the shot is fired. This shot can incinerate objects over a wide range and is unique to the silvanna. It has virtually no armor-piercing ability. |
| Two-phase targeting based on observation of the preliminary shot trajectory path. |
| Refers to a targeting system in which they utilize the trajectory results of a preliminary shot to adjust targeting variables (left-right and target distance) and produce a hit as soon as possible. This targeting method is different from the norm in this world, which is to directly target battleships at close range. At this point in time, the Silvanna is the only battleship that utilizes this long-range targeting strategy. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Vince |
| Vincent's nickname.
We don't know why they bothered to put this on the website when Vincent Artsai has already been listed, but they did, so here it is ^_^ |

| Title Explanation |
|
Isolated Pawn
|
| In chess, it denotes a situation in which a pawn is extremely vulnerable due to its isolated position. |
| Machinery |
| Claudia Fluid cycling distance |
| Vanships achieve lift and thrust by circulating nearly vaporized Claudia Fluid at very high pressures through the pipes located at the Vanship's rear. In this episode, Claus and Tatiana were unable to effect much lift because they cut out the damaged portion of the pipes. |
| Mass Balance |
| In this episode, the capsules fell to the ground when mass balance was disrupted. Shifting luggage and/or damaged/warped frame structure may have caused the disruption. |
| Military |
| Dounia's Rifle |
| The prototype of the new model for the multi-fire shotgun developped by Deusis. It uses compressed air cartridges. Due to limited range and firepower, it was never officially endorsed. In this operation, Deusis equipped female soldiers who were never expected to be in the front lines with this rifle. |
| Officer Academy |
| While there are numerous officer academies in Anatoure, the majority were established by the more powerful nobles to educate their private army's officers. The Imperial Officer Academy in the capital is the only one that freely admits students. The Academy is under the Prime Minister's supervision, and Alex, Sophia, and Vincent are all its graduates. Tatiana was also receiving a scholarship for academic excellence there, but due to a certain incident, she lost her eligibility and became unable to continue her studies. |
| Shelter |
| The Silvanna has many bases established in relatively unpopulated areas in order to conduct various clandestine operations. Many such shelters exist in the desert, and Claus and Tatiana headed towards one of them. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| George Hedde |
| Ravey's father and close friend of Claus's father as well as his navi. Along with Claus's father, he went missing in the Grand Stream. Until now, Tatiana had never conversed with Ravey to a significant degree and did not have the opportunity to learn Ravey's full name. She therefore had no idea that Claus and Ravey's parents were the famous Valka & Hedde pair. |
| Hamilcar Valka |
| Claus's father. A well-known Vanship pilot, he received the mission to deliver a peace proposal to Deusis and went into the Grand Stream, but he never came back. |

Her father is a noble, but his rank is an extremely low one, being baronet (rank below a baron and above a knight). In addition to being bedridden due to an illness, he also fell from favor and lost his property. Tatiana barely qualified for entry into Officer School. |
| World |
| Left Behind Nobles |
| In the world of Last Exile, those who are socially and economically privileged tend to live in locations that are at higher altitudes. The term "left behind nobles" refers to impoverished nobles who were unable to relocate to higher altitutdes during urbanization. In principle, established nobles would receive land from the state during relocation. However, in these nobles' case, it was deemed unnecessary. As such, the term also denotes nobles who were abandoned by the state. |
| Peace Proposal |
| Ten years ago, the pro-peace faction in Anatoure sent a peace proposal to Deusis in order to end the war. To escape detection by the Guild, they chose a Vanship carrier instead of a ship, but their hope vanished along with the the carriers Valka, Hedde, and one of their assistants. |
| .:Episode 14:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Etude Ravey (Lavie)
|
| The term means "practice piece" or "practice work". In chess, it refers to practice in the form of a mock chess match. This is reflected in the episode by the fact that we can observe Claus and Ravey trying to practice flying cold through Ravey's eyes. |
| Machinery |
| Camera |
| Along with film, cameras are quite the luxury item, one costing about as much as the annual salary of a middle-class household. It is thought that Claus's father originally bought the camera to take aerial photographs. |
| Immigration Capsules |
| Large-scale transport capsules that Deusis developped with the Guild's support in order to immigrate to Anatoure. The capsules utilize Claudia Units in order to levitate, but it does not have flexible maneuvering capabilities. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Eustina Valka |
| Claus's mother. Formerly the daughter of a noble, she soon passed away after her husband's death due to worry and hardships she was not used to. |
| World |
| 10 Stars |
| Denotes missions that considered to be of the highest difficulty by the Vanship Consortium. This designation is never given to anything other than missions that are of national significance. |
| Grade 3 Water |
| The most high-quality water one can obtain in Norkia, it is directly from the source. At Madosein's mansion, it is used daily for drinking. |
| Half Gallon |
| A half gallon is equivalent to 2.27 liters. So, buying a half gallon of water is basically equivalent to buying a 2L bottle of water.
This entry is a cultural reference for those of us who are used to the holy metric system of measurement as opposed to the diabolic nasty English system of measurement. |

| Title Explanation |
|
Fairy Chess
|
| In chess, it refers to a chess problem in an unconventional layout. A situation that does not follow the norm, it involves chess moves that go against the rules, unconventional positioning of pieces early on in the game, etc. Each piece begins to move with total disregard for previously established patterns, and the chess players' intent now appears different than their original. |
| Geography |

Breakthrough
|
| In military jargon, it refers to a particular strategy that will result in a breakthrough. In chess, it refers to a move in which a certain piece is sacrificed in order to breach the opponent's position. In this episode, we can see Sophia, the Emperor, Prime Minister Marius, and Deusis each make their breakthrough move. |
| Machinery |
| Transport Carrier |
| Refers to the Heavy Cargo Sophia was on. It has a large emblem of Anatoure's emblem on its side. The rank of the person in transit can be deduced to some extent by the color of the ship and by the size and location of the emblem. |
| Military |
| Scolopendra Cannon |
| A cannon intended for attacks over extremely long distances. Designed with multiple "steam chambers", the cannon accelerates the launched shot in a step-wise fashion via several steam-powered propulsion mechanisms that are set along the barrel. This allows the shot to achieve a very high initial velocity. Measures to counteract the resultant strain/pressure on the barrel and to fine-tune the timing of acceleration-inducing bursts of high-pressure steam proved quite difficult and delayed the cannon's research and development. |
| Miscellaneous Characters |
| Palace Guard |
| His name is Knox. He tried to assassinate Sophia under the Emperor's orders, but the Prime Minister had anticipated the move and sent Vincent, who thwarted the assassination. Since Knox was hesitant to kill Sophia to begin with, he happily follows Vincent's orders to disregard the Emperor's command. |
| The Urbanus' newly assigned captain |
| A certain Captain Frederick who looks the stereotypical "tool". A toady underling of General Vitellius, he was assigned to become captain of the Urbanus after Vincent was ousted from command. |
| World |
| Liquor |
| The drink Alex was indulging in. Instead of the typical seafarer's rum, it appears that it is actually single malt whiskey. |
| Tower Room |

| Military |
| Special Forces |
| Consisting mostly of Vanship pilots and riflemen, it was formed in preparation for the Unit Capture operation. As they will not be shooting at each other in linear formation as usual but will be having indoor shoot-outs, they require in-depth training. |
| That Thing |
| What Sophia asked Walker for in episode 8. The Silvanna is finally equipped with it in episode 17. |
| Torpedo |
| Like the multiple-launch, armor-piercing, dispersal cannon, this is an offensive weapon that uses a Vanship booster. However, it utilizes solid fuel instead of liquid. Being Anatoure's latest weapon, it has only been equipped on Urbanus-class warships. By the way, in this world, "torpedo" is an abbreviation for "fish-shaped mine".
The japanese word for torpedo is "gyorai", and the word for fish-shaped mine is "gyokeikirai".
|
| Unit Capture Operation |
| An operation to wrest control of the Claudia Units on battleships that are under the Guild's control and thereby gain freedom for those ships.
|

| For the same reasons why seafarers often refer to the bow as "omote" instead of "kanshu", they refer to the stern as "tomo" instead of "kanbi".
Phonetic reference.
|
| World |
| Coronation |
| A ceremony to invest Sophia with Imperial authority. Emperors-to-be ascend the throne after swearing oaths to the wind, those who fly the skies, and time (as symbolized by the hourglass). |
| Day of Vows |
| The Guild conducts a ceremony for those who reach seventeen years of age. During this ceremony, they must swear fealty to the current Maestro, and the day of the ceremony is called the day of vows. As one of the most important events for the Guild, even those who are tending to the battleship Claudia Units must "attend" this ceremony, albeit via visual feed on monitors. |

| .:Episode 19:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Sicilian Defense
|
| This term means "defense by a Sicilian". In chess, it is one of the set sequences used to conquer the opponent's queen. In addition, Sicilian mafia are said to deliver gifts to those whom are targets. Was the grandiose gift of roses at the coronation a metaphor for Delphine's declaration of war? |
| Military |
| Sonic Torpedo |
| A torpedo that will explode after traveling a certain distance for the sole purpose of emitting sound. If there are objects around the torpedo when it explodes, echoes will be generated. The Silvanna and the Urbanus's aural scanning machines detect these echoes, and by analyzing the differences in sound reception between these two ships, they are able to deduce the objects' relative location and distance. |
| World |
| Deusis' Newest Model |
| This term refers to the multi-fire rifle Dounia carried in episode 13. For details, see the entry for "Dounia's Rifle". |
| Imperial Flag |
| Ships with the Emperor onboard must raise the Imperial Flag. However, the Urbanus's second-in-command had predicted that Sophia will remain on the Silvanna and lowered the Imperial Flag prior to Vincent's solitary return. |
| Mark of the Oath |
| This refers to the mark that has began to appear on Deeo's forehead. Guild members will exhibit this mark on their foreheads when their seventeenth birthday approaches, and the mark is taken as proof of their oath of fealty to Delphine. Initially, this mark did not have the power to bind its bearer to the oath. However, when Delphine became the Maestro, she made all the Guild members undergo modifications such that the mark will have a coercive effect. Lycius and other rebels left the Guild before this coercion came into effect. |
| Natal Week |
| Unlike the rest of the world, the Guild celebrates birthdays starting a week before. This seven-day period is called "natal week". |
| Salaried Pay |
| Until now, it was Sophia's responsibility to dole out salaried pay to the Silvanna crew. After she left, there was a lag in the payment schedule. Although this is not of much consequence while the ship is out at "sea" since there is no real way to use the money, it could pose significant difficulties for those such as Tatiana who send funds to their families. |
| .:Episode 20:. |
| Title Explanation |
|
Grand Stream
|
| A tremendous air current that separates Anatoure and Deusis. In the periphery, wind speeds surpass 100 knots. As a result, the standard Vanship is damaged within minutes spent in the Grand Stream, and Anatourean battleships would experience extreme difficulty due to their Guild-restricted Unit output limitations. However, the Grand Stream's wind speeds are not uniform; there are currents with relatively low speeds, known as the "Rain Birds' Path". Several Paths have been confirmed. The most substantial, main current flows near the Guild and connects Anatoure and Deusis airspace. While this term is spelled "Grand Stream", it is sometimes spelled "Ground Stream" since the Grand Stream is equivalent to "earth" for Guild members who live in an aerial city. |
| Machinery |
| Cube |
| The core of Exile's defense system. Each core is equipped with a camera for monitoring purposes and tentacles for attacking. |
